Development History

How Gary Grigsby and SSI created a reusable Eastern Front battlefield system.

Overview

Gary Grigsby's design built on his earlier interest in data-rich military simulations. SSI provided publishing, documentation, testing, packaging, and access to an audience already familiar with serious computer wargames.

Development

The design challenge was to represent many interacting variables on limited 8-bit hardware. Units therefore act as compact information models: each counter carries enough data to distinguish armor, mobility, firepower, training, and condition without requiring a full tactical miniatures simulation.

The scenario generator was especially important because it extended play beyond a fixed historical battle and made the system useful as a general Eastern Front sandbox.
