How to play — a quick tutorial
From the title screen choose New Game, pick a class (Fighter, Magic User, or Thief), name your hero, and select Begin the Adventure. You can instead choose Continue to resume a saved game, or Import Hero from QFG I and paste a hero code (a sample code is built in).
| Action | Keys |
|---|---|
| Move your hero | Arrow keys or WASD |
| Interact / talk / begin a fight | Space or E |
| Character sheet (stats, inventory, export code) | C |
| Quest log (and Save Game) | Q |
| Sound / Music / Narration / Fullscreen / Volume | Buttons & slider in the bottom bar |
Browsers keep audio muted until you interact with the page — your first click or key press turns the sound on automatically.
Walk up to a highlighted object (a shop, the fountain, the guard, a gate, or an elemental) until its label appears, then press Space. Gates and paths at the edges of a scene travel between the Fountain Plaza, the Desert, and the Oasis.
Shapeir has two scenes: the Plaza (fountain, apothecary, magic shop, and the guard) and the Market (weapon & armor shop, the inn, and the Adventurers' Guild). Rest at the inn to fully heal and pass to the next day. At the Guild you can pay to train skills, watch your rank rise with experience, and — once Shapeir is saved — receive the pass to Raseir.
Buy weapons and armor at the market. A better weapon adds to your attack; armor reduces the damage you take. Buying an upgrade equips it automatically, and you can change gear any time from your character sheet (C).
Combat is turn based. On your turn choose one action; then the foe acts:
Wandering monsters (brigands, jackalmen, beasts) roam the desert and drop gold and experience — ordinary fights you win by wearing them down. The elementals are different: each regenerates and hits hard, so ordinary attacks rarely win. Use the correct counter item (or spell) and the elemental is undone at once:
| Elemental | Counter | Where to get it |
|---|---|---|
| Fire | Flask of Water | Fill free at the plaza fountain |
| Air | Dispel Potion | Magic Shop |
| Earth | Acid Flask | Apothecary |
| Water | Fire Oil, or the Flame Dart spell | Apothecary / learn as a Magic User |
Saving Shapeir isn't the end. Once all four elementals fall, see the Guildmaster for a Pass to Raseir, then take the far-east road from the desert crossroads. In Raseir, buy a Magic Mirror at the black market — the only thing that can turn the sorcerer Ad Avis's own death-spell back on him — and face him in his palace.
Defeating Ad Avis frees Raseir and completes your Trial by Fire, reaching the true ending with a summary of your run. (Saving Shapeir alone completes Act I; the full tale runs through both cities.)
If your Health reaches zero you do not die permanently — you wake back at the plaza fountain with half your Health restored and a little less gold. Regroup, buy what you need, and try the fight again.
The game autosaves to your browser as you play. Press Q and choose Save Game to save on demand, or open the character sheet with C and use Export Hero Code to copy a portable code you can paste back in later or on another device. A Continue button appears on the title screen whenever a save exists. Choose Quit to Title at any time to start over.
