How to Play Checkers

How to Begin

Choose a Game Mode in the side panel: Human vs Human, Human vs AI, or AI vs AI. In Human vs AI, pick your color (Black moves first) and an AI difficulty. Press New Game to start.

Controls

The game is played entirely with the mouse. Click one of your pieces to select it; its legal destination squares are highlighted. Click a highlighted square to move. Click the piece again to deselect. Undo takes back your last move, and Hint suggests a good move.

Turn Order

Black always moves first. Players then alternate turns. In AI vs AI mode the computer plays both sides automatically at the speed you choose.

Movement

Regular pieces move one square diagonally forward onto an empty dark square. Kings (crowned pieces) may also move diagonally backward. A piece that reaches the opponent's back row is crowned a king immediately, ending its move.

Capturing and Scoring

Jump diagonally over an adjacent enemy piece onto the empty square beyond it to capture. Captures are mandatory: if a jump is available you must take it, and a piece that completes a jump must keep jumping while further captures are available (multi-jump). The score cards show each side's remaining pieces.

Winning Conditions

You win when your opponent has no pieces left or cannot make a legal move.

Losing Conditions

You lose when you run out of pieces or have no legal move on your turn. If 40 consecutive moves pass without a capture, the game is a draw.

Saving and Restarting

There is no save feature; games are short and play in one sitting. Press New Game at any time to restart with the current settings.
