Before dawn on 16 December three German armies came out of the Eifel forests into a quiet sector held by four American divisions. You have sixteen days, a fuel pool that will not last them, and weather that keeps the Allied air forces on the ground for the first week. The Meuse is somewhere out to the west, and the bridges over it are already wired.
