Zanzibar, April 1862. Dr. Samuel Ferguson means to cross Africa from the Indian Ocean to the Atlantic without once setting foot on the ground, in a balloon that climbs by warming her own hydrogen instead of throwing away gas and sand.
The apparatus drinks water. So do the three men in the car. Every mile of height is bought out of the same tanks.
