You are d'Artagnan, eighteen years old, with a yellow horse, fifteen crowns, your father's sword and a letter of introduction that will be stolen before you can present it. Two years ago the Queen of France gave twelve diamond studs to a man who was not the King; on Monday the tenth she will be required to wear them in public, as a favour the Cardinal has asked for very sweetly. You have four days, three friends you have not met yet, and sixty leagues of watched road between Paris and the sea.
