A Study in Scarlet is the first Sherlock Holmes novel, introducing the brilliant consulting detective and his future chronicler, Dr. John Watson. After Watson returns to London following military service, he becomes Holmes’s roommate at 221B Baker Street and is soon drawn into a baffling murder investigation. The case begins with a corpse found in an empty house and expands into a story of revenge, detection, and hidden motives. Combining mystery, deduction, and adventure, the novel established many of the elements that would define the Holmes stories.
